Dedicated to sustainability and preserving our planet for future generations, Martin Guitar is proud to reinforce that call to action this Earth Day with the all-new DSS Biosphere® II. The third model in our Earth Day series showcases another stunning work of art from acclaimed artist Robert Goetzl, taking us to the waters off the coast of Hawaii. This model is a tribute to the Keiki Kohola Project – Caring for Calves in Maui Waters, a nonprofit that promotes the protection of humpback whale mother and calf pairs during their time in Hawaiian waters. C. F. Martin & Co. has made a generous donation to its cause. The DSS Biosphere II is also FSC® certified, 100% plastic-free, and will be adorned with the Preferred by Nature Hummingbird Seal. It’s a satin sloped-shoulder Dreadnought that provides a warm and mellow tone rounded out by powerful mids, bright and airy trebles, and plenty of volume. All nature has its own song to sing. With the DSS Biosphere II, Martin hopes to raise awareness of protecting the environment, and the beautiful music it creates.

DSS Biosphere™ II Resources

Martin Guitar's collaboration with The Keiki Kohola Project marks a harmonious blend of craftsmanship and conservation. The Martin DSS Biosphere™ II guitar pays homage to the nonprofit's dedication to protecting humpback whale mother and calf pairs in Hawaiian waters. As pregnant humpbacks journey over 2,000 miles to Hawaii's nurturing waters, the project ensures their safety and preservation. By conducting vital research and advocating for targeted protection measures, the Keiki Kohola Project safeguards the future of these vulnerable populations. This partnership between Martin Guitar and the Keiki Kohola Project not only celebrates the natural beauty of these majestic creatures but also underscores Martin's commitment to environmental stewardship. C. F. Martin & Co.'s generous donation further amplifies the company's support for the Keiki Kohola Project's mission.

Preferred by Nature

Martin Guitar has officially achieved Preferred by Nature Sustainability Framework certification for the Martin DSS Biosphere™ II guitar. The company was the first to achieve this certification in the U.S. and only the second worldwide with its predecessor, the OM Biosphere, which was designed to show Martin’s support for the preservation and replenishment of coral reefs, which are some of the most diverse and valuable ecosystems on earth. The model is FSC® certified (license code FSC-C008304) and the only plastic-free guitar in production today. Even the gig bag is sustainable: made from hemp. With the Preferred by Nature certification, this model will be adorned with the Preferred by Nature Hummingbird Seal, a distinction that was not easily earned and one that the company is quite proud of.

Sustainability Framework Verified Wood Certificate Code PBNC-039001

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), founded in 1993, is an international, nongovernmental organization that was established to create global standards for responsible forest management, with the goal of protecting forests for future generations. C. F. Martin & Co. first received FSC certification in 1997, and now has multiple-site FSC certification to encompass both its Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and Navojoa, Sonora, Mexico, production facilities. Martin has steadily increased purchases of FSC certified tonewoods and offered several FSC certified models in recent years, including the 00L Earth, OM Biosphere™, and all-new DSS Biosphere II. For wood suppliers and producers of wood products like Martin Guitar, FSC certification shows a commitment to responsible forest management, protection of endangered species, and cultural and economic fairness for indigenous peoples.
